Senior Medicare Patrol
Who We Are
The Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging operates the Senior
Medicare Patrol (SMP) Project.
Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is a consumer education and information project. The SMP program works with local Area Agencies on Aging staff and volunteers to provide education and outreach to consumers about Medicare / Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse. Volunteers are recruited and trained to provide presentations and outreach about Medicare / Medicaid fraud and abuse within local communities. The Virginia SMP operates a toll free number 1-800-938-8885 to assist consumers, family members and health care professionals in identifying and reporting health care fraud, waste and abuse.
The Virginia SMP program is one of 64 community-based programs in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. The Senior Medicare Patrol Project is supported by the Grant # 90AM2953 from the Administration on Aging, Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C. 20201. The SMP is the only federally funded effort designed to use community-based volunteer driven organizations to educate consumers about how to prevent and report health care fraud, waste and abuse.
